Sounds of the Next Generation (SONG) is proud to acknowledge the support of the Ontario Arts Council through the Artists in Communities and Schools Grant, which has made it possible to deliver high-quality, in-school music programming to students across Northumberland County.

From May 2025 through this spring, the Ontario Arts Council grant helped SONG work with 136 students across four rural schools, delivering hands-on music education directly in classrooms:

Students explored SONGtech, choral music, and drumming, guided by SONG’s professional Teaching Artists:
By working directly in schools, SONG ensures that every student has access to music, regardless of geography, transportation, or financial barriers. This model significantly increases participation and allows students to experience music as part of their everyday learning environment.

“This is how we reach every student where they are,” says Miles Bowman, Executive Director of SONG. “By bringing music directly into rural classrooms, we’re not just offering programming — we’re helping close the opportunity gap between rural and urban youth.”
These residencies are part of SONG’s broader goal to partner with 10+ schools across Northumberland County, building a sustainable, community-rooted model for music education.
SONG extends its sincere thanks to the Ontario Arts Council for investing in rural creativity, student voice, and community connection.
Every student deserves access to music. Your school could be next!
