Do you know Sarah Quartel?
She is a Canadian composer, conductor, and educator who has recently moved from Victoria B.C. to Gananoque ON. A number of years ago I commissioned Sarah to compose a charming piece of music called Alice for La Jeunesse, as well as an exciting trio of a cappella pieces called Winter Solstice.
I wanted to order some of Sarah’s music for our young singers and so I called the cell number on her website, only to find out that she has moved to a small town twenty minutes from my home in Kingston. Two days later we met at my place. I wanted to pick her brain about bucket drumming: as a classroom teacher, Sarah has taught bucket drumming in her classroom and she has lots of music and written resources. She has written a piece of music for junior choir, bucket drums, and piano called To The Beat Of A Different Drum. We will begin it this fall with our youngest El Sistema singers—potentially about 100 young voices. As it will be learned primarily by rote, I wanted the composer to advise me about how many copies to order. Sarah replied that she would like to donate the music to us. She has sent us a PDF with copyright permission for our use.
This is a very generous offer. At $2.25 per copy plus tax, we have made a very significant saving. Thank you Sarah—I can’t wait to begin.
